Grateful Dead
Workingman's Dead
Workingman's Dead is the fourth Grateful Dead studio album, recorded in February 1970 and originally released on June 14, 1970. In 2003, the album was ranked number 262 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album’s design displayed another of the Grateful Dead covers created by Mouse Studios, who also did album covers for bands such as Steve Miller and later, Journey. The sepia-toned photo features the band dressed as cowboys and lined up in the street like the Magnificent Seven; perfectly matching the down to earth songs on the album which were a major departure from the band’s psychedelic origins. Ross’s Take: “I discovered the Dead when I was sixteen (2004). I studied that band; it had the greatest influence on my own guitar playing. Me and my buddy Zach would sneak out in high school, smoke a little tree, and walk the streets with our guitars-we called it ‘adventuring’.”
